Mowing the Lawn portfolio, 2006

Astroturf lines the inside cover of Greg Stimac’s Mowing the Lawn portfolio box. It is a material as artificial and aesthetic as the activity of lawn maintenance. Taken all across the United States, Stimac’s photographs of people mowing includes everyone from bored teenagers to intent senior citizens, operating everything from old push-mowers to well-equipped ride-on models, to trim land ranging from weedy side yards to majestic expanses of lush green. The variety of his survey highlights the importance of this ritual, the pursuit of a particular presentation of home and property, and underscores how surprisingly universal this pastime seems to be for Americans.

Greg Stimac was born in 1976 in Euclid, Ohio. In 2005, Columbia College Chicago awarded him a BA in photography, an Albert P. Weisman Memorial Fellowship, and a Purchase Award. Solo exhibitions of his work include 12 × 12 at the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art and Mowing the Lawn at Bucket Rider Gallery, and his photographs have also been exhibited at Photocentric, MNCP, Minneapolis, MN; Are You Serious, Wendy Cooper Gallery, Chicago; and Crocker Kingsley Biennial Art Exhibition, Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, CA. Stimac lives in Chicago.
