Susan Carr’s Personal Spaces – Details of American Homes series takes as its subject American residences which have been occupied by the same people for at least forty years. Carr was moved to begin the work in 2000, after a visit to her aunt’s home in Jackson, Mississippi sparked the speculation that such unique personal spaces were becoming increasing rare in the face of growing cultural homogenization. Carr selected the span of forty years as the minimum period to evidence a significant passage of time yet still allow enough subject matter to make the project viable.
Carr was born in Indiana in 1963. She received a BA in art from Western Michigan University (1985), where she also studied sociology and art history. A visiting artist at the University of Michigan and the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit, Carr has also taught photography at Western Michigan University. January 10 through March 3, 2005, the Museum of Contemporary Photography showed a selection of the Personal Spaces – Details of American Homes pictures with photographs by Jessica Rowe in the exhibition Open House. Carr’s work has also been exhibited at the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana; Penn State Altoona College, Pennsylvania; Fontana Festival of Art, Shelbyville, Michigan; and in Kalamazoo, Michigan at Retro Gallery, Park Gallery, TraverRohrback Gallery, Kingscott Gallery, and Arts Council of Kalamazoo. She is the co-owner of Carr Ciadella Photography, and has served the American Society of Media Photographers in a variety of roles, including that of National President.
