Celebrating South Side Stories

About The Event

Join this celebration of the historic and ongoing role that art and design played in growing communities and strengthening neighborhoods on Chicago’s South Side. Participants will experience this rich history through a variety of activities, including all-ages artmaking workshops and other artist-led projects, live performances, an interactive trolley tour of cultural spaces across the South Side, and a story-sharing exchange.

This all-day festival of art, music, film, and food kicks-off a series of exhibitions and projects about the history of South Side art and design that will take place at the DuSable Museum of African American History, Hyde Park Art Center, Museum of Contemporary Photography, Smart Museum of Art, and South Side Community Art Center during the fall of 2018 as part of Art Design Chicago.

The MoCP will present two workshops at the Hyde Park Art Center:

What's Your Bag?

Silkscreen and take home a tote bag with one of artist Ralph Arnold’s trademark, counter-cultural phrases from the 1960s: "What's Your Bag?" 

Arnold explored the complexity of his identity as a gay, black, Korean War veteran through his collages, many of which drew upon the liberated sensibility of the 1960s. Arnold, who showed his work at the Hyde Park Art Center in the 1960s, is the focus of the upcoming exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Photography: "The Many Hats of Ralph Arnold: Art, Identity & Politics,” which opens October 11, 2018.

Do What Ralph Does

Try your hand at photocollage, an art-making technique perfected by Ralph Arnold. Arnold, who showed his work at the Hyde Park Art Center in the 1980s, is the focus of the new exhibition at MoCP: "The Many Hats of Ralph Arnold: Art, Identity & Politics".   Participants will hear about Arnold's process and make their own pictures to take home using pieces of photographs or negatives.
