The fading image: Binh Danh, Sylvie Pénichon, and Nadine Wietlisbach
Museums work to preserve photographs because they are cultural artifacts, but they are also material objects. From distinct points of view, exhibiting artist Binh Danh, Conservator, Department of Photography at the Art Institute of Chicago Sylvie Pénichon, and Director of Photoforum PasquArt in Biel, Switzerland Nadine Wietlisbach will discuss the inherent instability of photographic materials and consider how artists and institutions attempt to preserve photographs.

As photography has become digitized, integrated with technological devices that track human movement, produce data, and distribute imagery via networked signals, the traditional boundaries of the medium have eroded. Duncan Forbes, Co-director and Curator, Fotomuseum Winterthur, and Alison Nordström, Independent Scholar and Curator will join MoCP Curator and Assistant Director Karen Irvine to examine the role of the museum and the material artwork in relationship to evolving photographic technologies.
